Nyerere National Park Activities

If you are looking for the ultimate Wildlife encounter then there is little to compare to the intensity and thrill of an escorted walking safari.

The walks are varied in length and designed to suit your needs, so you can go out just for a short early morning walk and again in the late afternoon or you can opt for a long early morning walk or a long late afternoon one.

Dedicate yourself to something a little more adventurous and strike out on an adventurous mission.

Walking safaris are perfect for those aiming to dig a little deeper beneath the skin of your Tanzania adventure.

Wildlife connoisseurs adore Nyerere, and for us, for that reason, it’s familiar territory. It’s a huge area way down in southern Tanzania. The Rufiji River is its life-force: swirling, tawny waters – full of hippopotamus and crocodile – cleave the eleven million acres of bush, woodland, hills and grasslands. In this huge, fascinatingly diverse ecosystem, we revel in the anticipation of discovery as it unfolds before us.

A game drive in Nyerere National Park can vary from a day to a full experience 4-5 day game safari

here are two types of boat safaris offered while at Nyerere National Park. The short 2-3 hour sunset or dawn boat safari trips along the Rufiji River outside the reserve (so no entry permit needed), or full day boat safaris which explore the Rufiji river as well as the lakes of the Selous. The short boat safari can be done in the morning or in the afternoon. In the morning you have beautiful light (unless it is cloudy), but in the afternoon there is a greater chance of seeing crocodiles because temperatures are higher. An afternoon boat safari has the advantage you sail during sunset.

Let us help plan your perfect romantic celebration, At Jimbiza we can make your proposal, Engagement, Wedding or even your Engagement celebration be one that you can always remember

If you have your own fishing kit and are interested in fishing in the Selous, we would be happy to help!

Our 12 seater boat is available for hire, but it is also possible to fish from the river bank in camp

With over 440 species recorded, Nyerere NP (Selous GR) is an excellent birding destination. The most conspicuous birdlife is attracted to the sandbanks, lagoons, islands and channels along the Rufiji River. A good way to enjoy the birdlife is on a boat safari. Common birds include yellow-billed storks, kingfishers, lapwings and colorful bee-eaters. Fish eagle and palm-nut vulture can be found perched high in the trees and skimmers can sometimes be seen flying across the water. Migratory birds are present from November to April.

Mloka village is situated down river from Selous Jimbiza, only a short drive by car or simply walk there. Home to many of our camp staff, a tour here is a very personal experience and the focus is on meeting locals, learning about their day-to-day lives, and visiting places like the primary school, market and police post.
